Suffolk’s Women’s Softball season is soon to be underway for the 2023 season with their first game this Saturday, a double header against  No. 1 team in the country Corning Community College. There is a lot that the team has to look forward to this season. 

With their schedule — as well as their first game — being quite competitive head coach Joseph Kosina has faith in his team to deliver big. 

“We feel pretty confident, we’ll definitely know more after our first game on Saturday.” Kosina said. “The main goal is to fulfill the goal of winning the Regional Championship since last year was the first year since 2016, we didn’t win it.” 

Coach Kosina has as well expressed his desire to return to the World Series championship where they finished runners up in 2017. As well as falling in the NJCAA National Championship Game, this time around of course looking to come out on top. 

The Sharks who are ranked at No. 7 to start the season have quite a hefty schedule. They Play three of the top six teams in the country being top team Division 3 Corning Community College who is ranked No.1 , then the team is going down to Florida for a triple header playing two games on March 17, against Parkland community college who is currently a Division 2 scholarship school who is ranked No. 6. The team then comes back home to take on Division 3 Brookdale college ranked No. 3 on April 30. 

Third year Pitcher Gianna Postiglione 22, majoring in Journalism is one of many players very confident about the teams direction heading into their Saturday game against No. 1 Corning. 

“I’m excited. It’s going to be a lot of fun like I said it’s gonna be challenging, but it’s going to help us team bonding wise and help us grow as a team.” Said Postiglione. “It’s going to help us mend together not only on the field but off the field as well” 

In addition two returning second year players Pitcher and Outfielder Katelyn Lysogorski 20, along with NJCAA 1st All Academic Team member, as well as Region XV Gold Glove Award winner first and third baseman, Gabriella Vacchio 20, are both determined for a championship outcome expressing it as their “ultimate” goal to this season. 

Third year player Jaden Thompson who is a two time NJCAA All-American as well as two time Region 15 player of the year, is focused on helping out the rest of her team to succeed to an eventual World Series appearance. 

 “I mean, we’re sort of a new team, a lot of our returners graduated last season so I’m looking forward to just teaching new girls on what to work with,” said Thompson. 

Since coming up short in last season’s Regional Championships game to Monroe College in a 3 game series losing the finale of the series 5-4, Thompson aspirations for this season is nothing short of a world series victory. 

“We definitely want to go to the World Series this year, it’s definitely on our schedule.” 

Suffolks Women’s 2023 Softball season begins at home on the Brentwood Grant campus on Saturday, March 11, against Corning Community College in a double header at 12 p.m. followed by its second game at 2 p.m.
