A university’s men’s lacrosse team located in Medford, Massachusetts is under investigation after nine players were hospitalized after participating in a 45 minute workout on Sept. 16. 50 members of the lacrosse team took part in this workout that was led by a former graduate of the university who recently completed Navy SEAL Training.
In May 2024, the men’s lacrosse team won its fourth NCAA Championship title defeating Rochester Institute of Technology.
Parker Collins, who is the executive director of media relations at Tufts University, released a statement to NPR News explaining how all 50 members that took part in the workout were evaluated by medical professionals and by the conclusion of the check up, 12 players were diagnosed and nine were hospitalized with rhabdomyolysis.
“The university continues to closely monitor the condition of the team, and some individual team members have been medically cleared to resume training,” Collins said.
According to Cleveland Clinic, rhabdomyolysis is “a rare muscle injury where your muscles break down. This is a life-threatening condition that can happen after an injury or excessive exercise without rest.”
On Sept. 25, the University stated that all of the players that were hospitalized after last week’s workout have since been released from the hospital.
Until the investigation is complete there will be no additional informational research released upon the circumstances of what exactly happened involving the incident.
