The Islip Arts Building was evacuated for most of the day on Feb. 7 after a gas leak was detected, college officials said.
Classes scheduled for in the Islip Arts Building were canceled from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., moved to remote instruction, or to another location on the Ammerman campus, according to several notifications from Vice President for Institutional Advancement Mary Lou Araneo.
With gas utility National Grid on scene to address the issue, “Employees who have arrived to work in the building are invited to work in the Library until Islip is re-opened,” she stated at 9:01 a.m.
By noon, students and staff were notified that Islip Arts was closed for the remainder of the day.
And by 3 p.m., gas service was restored to the building and it was fully reopen,” Araneo said in an update.
“At this time, all classes scheduled to be held in the Islip Arts building, will take place as usually scheduled.”
By Feb. 10, a Public Safety officer who declined to be named for publication characterized the gas leak as “minor.”
“We just had to make sure everyone got out of the building safely. It really wasn’t a big deal. We got the issue resolved fairly quickly,” he said. Now, we just check time to time to make sure there’s no lingering smell, but everything’s taken of, and the building [has] been open.”
