The Ammerman campus kicked off Hispanic Heritage Month with a festive celebration in the Babylon Student Center cafeteria on Sept. 17 highlighted by live salsa music and a parade of dancing students.
In addition to music from the band La Sonora 495, students also enjoyed photo opportunities, face painting, cultural displays and giveaways, including national flags and key chains.
La Sonora 495 lead singer Larry Belfort, 64, said the band was thrilled to see students having a good time.
“They danced, and that’s all you want from an audience,” Belfort said. “I’m very happy about that.”
Sponsored Multicultural Affairs, which is part of the Office of Campus Activities & Students Leadership Development, the event took place from 12-2 p.m.

Kristin Peters, professor of world languages, said she encourages her students to attend events on campus, including during Hispanic Heritage Month, which runs through Oct. 15.
“It’s very important because it shows our students that they are valued,” Peters said in the packed cafeteria. “I’m encouraged by the turnout.”
Students said this celebration made them feel appreciated and proud to share their heritage with their peers on campus.
“It truly captures the culture of our countries and expresses the amount of love, respect, and appreciation we have,” Carla Zavala said.
