Twenty-One Pilots is a musical duo from Columbus, Ohio. The group features Tyler Joseph along with Josh Dun. Tyler Joseph formed the band with his high school friends Nick Thomas and Chris Salih. Tyler recorded and practiced his own music in his own basement. Eventually Nick Thomas and Chris Salih left the band and Tyler Joseph brought in Josh Dun as the drummer and ever since they have become an iconic duo. The name Twenty-One Pilots was inspired by Arthur Miller’s play All My Sons, in which 21 pilots are killed. The duo has toured at least 7 times around the world and the US bringing their music to thousands of fans. In 2016, Twenty-One Pilots won two American Music Awards for favorite Pop/Rock Band/Duo/Group and Favorite Alternative Artist.
The duo signed a record deal with Fueled by Ramen Records in 2012 and since their signing have released seven studio albums with their latest album titled Clancy. Most of their songs are about mental health, insecurity, and the search for meaning in life. They are famous for their songs such as “Stressed Out,” “Ride,” “Tear in My Heart,” “Heavydirtysoul,” “Chlorine,” “Shy Away” and many more. Tyler wrote a song about the night the GPS in his car got stolen and that is where he got the idea for the song “Car Radio.” The album titled Blurryface references a character that they both made up called “Insecurities.” The band uses things that happen in everyday life to make statements about the deeper feelings we all experience as well as suggestions on how to deal with the negative aspects of life.
Unlike other musical artists who promote themselves as celebrities, Tyler and Josh sometimes both wear masks to present a faceless entity so that anyone can identify with them and their music. I suggest people listen to their music as the duo have good taste and great passion. Twenty-One Pilots are an important band because their songs discuss ways to find comfort and help with mental health problems, issues that all of us have dealt with.
