On night two of the 2025 National Football League Draft, former Colorado Buffaloes QB Shedeur Sanders’ private phone number was leaked by an unknown person. After continuing to go undrafted in the second night of the NFL Draft, a video circulated around social media of Sanders receiving a phone call from whom he thought was the New Orleans Saints general manager Mickey Loomis.
In the video, Sanders answers the phone and the caller impersonating GM Loomis says “I’m gonna take you with our next pick here, but you’re going to have to wait a little bit longer, man. Sorry about that.”
When the caller hung up, Sanders asked those at his draft party “What does that mean?” as he was confused why they finished the call with “Sorry about that.”
After the phone hangs up, voices in the video can be heard laughing loudly and saying, “Oh my god! He bought it!”
The New Orleans Saints proceeded to take Tyler Shough, a quarterback from Louisville, with their second-round pick.
On the last day of NFL Draft, Sanders finally received the call from the Cleveland Browns, this time as the real deal. The Browns selected quarterback Shedeur Sanders with the 144th overall pick after they traded the 166th and 192nd overall pick with Philadelphia Eagles.
The Cleveland Browns held a conference call after the NFL Draft with Shedeur Sanders and asked him how he felt about the prank call. Sanders said it didn’t really have any impact on him. He also stated he doesn’t feed into any of the negativity or that stuff. Sanders also expressed how he felt that it was a childish act but that everybody does childish things here and there.
On the morning of April 27th, 2025 an NFL official said the league is looking into how the private number got leaked and then was used to prank call.
Sanders was not the only player who reportedly received a prank call. Tight End Tyler Warren received a prank call as well. While the Jets were on the clock at No.7, Warren received a phone call from someone who was impersonating GM Darren Mougey. Tyler Warren was later drafted at No.14 by the Indianapolis Colts.
