Suffolk County Community College canceled classes for a third straight day as crews work to clear the grounds of snow and ice on Wednesday, the school announced.
The campus remains closed to all vehicle and pedestrian traffic through at least Wednesday, said Irene Rios, Ammerman Campus CEO and Executive Dean. She said the presence of unauthorized individuals is currently hindering essential cleanup efforts.
“Having cars and people on campus slows down clearing of our lots, sidewalks, and roads, and is not safe,” Rios said in a memo to the college community.
The restriction comes as plant operations staff work around the clock to restore safe access to the Selden campus following recent winter weather.
Administrators emphasized that driving onto the grounds or attempting to enter campus buildings before operations officially resume creates safety hazards for both the public and the maintenance crews.
“As our Plant Operations staff members work hard to clear our campus, we ask that you DO NOT drive onto the campus or come into the buildings until we officially resume operations,” Rios added. “Having cars and people on campus slows down clearing of our lots, sidewalks, and roads, and is not safe.
The third day of closures follows a record blizzard that blanketed Long Island, with about 30 inches of snow piling near Islip MacArthur Airport Sunday into Monday.
